Over 1,000 bird flu outbreaks are reported in Europe in 3 months

From December 2020 to February this year, the number of outbreaks of avian influenza exceeded 1,000 cases in 25 member states of the European Union and the United Kingdom, with 592 farm recordings. The numbers were released by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the most impacted sector was the French, with 442 outbreaks on poultry farms.
Germany recorded 50 outbreaks and Poland 37 farm cases. These two countries and France altogether account for 43% of the European Union's poultry production. According to EFSA, due to the continued presence of the HPAI H5 virus in wild birds and the environment, there is still a potential spread risk.
Six different genotypes have been identified in Europe and Russia, suggesting a high propensity and mutagenicity of these viruses.
