African swine fever continues to be the main influencer of the meat market

Covid-19 has been causing losses worldwide, overcoat for the meat market. However, according to Rabobank, African swine fever remains being the main influence on global trade. There is still a production limitation in China, Vietnam, the Philippines and part of Eastern Europe.
Pig production in China is expected to fall between 15% and 20% in 2020, while in Vietnam and the Philippines the reduction is expected to be close to 10%, says the bank, adding that these countries should import more this year. Chinese pork imports are expected to reach record levels, and other meat imports are also expected to be significant, according to Rabobank.
“The process of recovering a pig production is long and, as much as there is an effort, even looking for breeding matrices from outside, many natural factors can interfere with the recovery time. There is no technology to speed this process. Still, for a long time we will have high demand from Asia.”, believes Giordano Fiorentin, Trade Marketing supervisor at KIT International.
